Digital Storytelling
Suzanne Mooney
Using iMovie, we each created a short 1 to 2 minute movie with the concept "Who Am I?" In preparation, a storyboard, or map of the exact images, narrations, and music to make up the video, was created ahead of time in order to have a clear plan for the video. A storyboard would be extremely useful to use with students to organize thoughts and save time so students know exactly what they plan to do before using the video-making program. The interpretation I took from "Who Am I?" was a video of the interests I have now and have had throughout my life along with events that have formed who I am today. Photos were collected from both my personal collection and borrowed with permission from the collections of friends to include in my video. I narrated my story using voice recording through iMovie and included music provided in the program to complete my movie. When the video was finished, it was uploaded to YouTube.
NETS-T Standard
The NETS-T Standard met in the Digital Storytelling project was Standard 2, which is to "Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments." The primary reason Standard 2 applies is because this assignment takes a project, "All About Me", that is usually done on paper or aloud in a presentation in elementary school, and uses technology to incorporate images and audio while providing students with valuable experience using programs that could be used not only later in their education, but also in life. The use of iMovie to create a video for the "Who Am I?" theme also creates a product that could be saved and looked back on later in life, whereas a paper can be easily lost or damaged, and a verbal presentation cannot be saved unless it is recorded.
